Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports have experienced an impressive 89.2% increase this year, reaching $459 million, primarily fueled by heightened demand from China, as reported by the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association.
China’s substantial imports include durian, bananas, and dragon fruit. The recent cold snaps in various regions of China have restricted domestic banana supply due to the fruit’s susceptibility to turning black in lower temperatures.
While China had a bountiful dragon fruit harvest last year, the season has concluded, presenting an opportunity for Vietnam to export dragon fruit from January to May.
During President Xi Jinping’s recent visit to Vietnam, the Chinese authorities expressed their willingness to open their market to various Vietnamese agricultural products, encompassing fresh coconut, frozen fruit products, citrus fruits, avocado, custard apple, and water apple.
Additionally, both nations signed a protocol for watermelon exports.
Beyond China, the United States, the European Union, and several Asian countries are also poised to expand their acceptance of Vietnamese fruits.
The U.S. and Australia are considering importing passion fruit, while Japan, South Korea, Australia, and India express interest in purchasing grapefruit, with India also exploring the possibility of durian imports.
