Vietnam ranks among the top five countries globally for the surge in newly established international schools, witnessing a notable 5% increase over the span of two years.
According to a February 2024 report from the school database ISC Research, the global landscape comprises over 14,000 international schools, educating approximately 6.9 million students worldwide. These schools generate a collective annual tuition revenue of $60.9 million.
The international school sector boasts more than 664,000 educators, marking a notable 13% rise compared to figures from five years ago.
Emerging at the forefront in the expansion of international schools is India, experiencing a significant 10% growth from 2022, reaching a total of 923 schools. The United Arab Emirates follows closely with a 9% increase, hosting 748 schools. China secures the third position, witnessing a 6% growth, now hosting 1,106 schools. Vietnam and Japan both exhibit a 5% growth, although the exact number of international schools is not specified in the report.
A 2022 report by the International Schools Database indicates that Vietnam houses over 120 international schools, spanning from kindergarten to high school levels, predominantly concentrated in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Meanwhile, Japan hosts approximately 100 international schools.
ISC Research highlights a substantial surge in demand for international schools in Vietnam, with a notable increase in numbers.
Since 2019, the country has witnessed a staggering 42% rise in the number of international schools, coupled with a 30% surge in student enrollment. Correspondingly, total school revenue has seen a remarkable 58% uptick. Notably, some institutions report yearly tuition fees ranging between VND500-900 million ($20,150-36,270).
The presence of international private schools not only appeals to affluent families but also fosters a heightened awareness of international education within Vietnam, as emphasized in the report.
Regionally, Asia leads the tally for international school presence, constituting 57% of global international schools, trailed by the Americas and Europe at 14-15%. Africa accounts for 12%, while Oceania claims a 2% share.
