Connecting Vietnam and Singapore with a New Undersea Cable

The VTS undersea cable, a joint venture between Viettel Group and Singtel, is set to link hashtag#Vietnam and hashtag#Singapore and is slated for operation in the second quarter of 2027.

In a memorandum inked on Thursday, Viettel and Singtel revealed plans for additional branches connecting Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia. Marking the inaugural direct cable venture between Vietnamese and Singaporean entities, it promises the swiftest path between Vietnam and the largest data center in Southeast Asia.

Singtel’s Vice Chairman, Seng Keat Ooi, emphasized the VTS cable’s role in meeting the surging demand for enhanced bandwidth and minimized latency in internet connectivity.

While the precise capacity of the cable remains undisclosed, both parties affirm it will significantly augment total international data capacity by hundreds of Tbps.

Vietnam is presently striving to become a digital hub by 2030, aligning with the Ministry of Information and Communication’s roadmap for international cable development. To achieve this vision, Vietnam aims to bolster its undersea cable network to a minimum of 15, boasting a combined data capacity of at least 334 Tbps. The plan mandates ownership of at least two cables by Vietnamese entities.

With five existing undersea cables, Vietnam faces operational challenges as they are managed by consortiums, potentially complicating problem resolution.
