The inaugural Arabic-Vietnamese dictionary was introduced during an event celebrating World Arabic Language Day (Dec. 18), organized by the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Vietnam in Hanoi on Sunday.
Counselor Hamoud Naif S. Almutairi, representing the embassy at the event, emphasized Saudi Arabia’s commitment to preserving and advancing the Arabic language. The country has played a significant role in elevating the language’s status, including advocating for Arabic’s recognition as one of the six official languages of the UN and as a language used in UNESCO Executive Board meetings.
The embassy has actively promoted the language by collaborating with other Arab embassies and Vietnamese educational institutions teaching Arabic. Counselor Almutairi highlighted their support for compiling the dictionary, aiming to create optimal conditions for teaching and learning activities. This initiative not only benefits students and educators but also supports Vietnamese individuals residing and working in Arab countries.
Do Tuan Minh, Chairman of the Council of the University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS) – Vietnam National University, Hanoi, noted that ULIS, the first institution in Vietnam to offer bachelor’s degree programs in Arabic, has made significant contributions to human resources training in this field over the past 27 years.
As part of the activities commemorating World Arabic Language Day, the Saudi Arabia Embassy organized an Arabic poetry recitation contest for Vietnamese students studying at ULIS and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities at Vietnam National University – HCMC.
