Honeywell, a US industrial powerhouse, announced on February 21 a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Green Solutions Group Corporation (TGS) for the Tra Vinh Green Hydrogen Project, Vietnam’s pioneering venture into green hydrogen production situated in the Mekong Delta.
With a substantial investment totaling VND8 trillion ($341 million), the Tra Vinh Green Hydrogen project spans across 21 hectares in Tra Vinh’s Duyen Hai district. Employing seawater electrolysis, the project harnesses electricity to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen. The resultant hydrogen, in liquid form, boasts ease of transport and versatility across various sectors.
Commencing with a groundbreaking ceremony in March 2023, the project is slated for completion within two years. Upon operation, it aims to yield an initial output of 24,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 195,000 tonnes of oxygen annually, creating employment opportunities for 300-500 local residents.
Pursuant to the MoU, Honeywell will contribute expertise in project automation design, management, and energy transition solutions, encompassing battery energy storage systems (BESS). This collaboration aims to facilitate TGS in integrating renewable energy sources seamlessly into the green hydrogen plant.
Ramanathan Valliyappan, regional general manager of Honeywell Process Solutions, remarked, “Honeywell’s battery energy storage system will serve as a pivotal enabler for the Tra Vinh Green Hydrogen project. It extends the utilization of renewable energy from TGS’ solar farms beyond daylight hours and supplements wind power during calm periods. The BESS platform not only mitigates costs but also reduces carbon emissions by ensuring grid stability sourced from renewable energy, thereby facilitating green hydrogen production at the Tra Vinh plant.”
Vietnam has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The nation faces significant climate change risks, ranking among the top five countries susceptible to severe social and economic consequences. However, Vietnam boasts immense solar and wind energy potential, particularly in the Mekong Delta region where the Tra Vinh plant is strategically positioned.
