Korean Air Implements Passenger Weight Measurement on International Flights

Korean Air, South Korea’s national airline, has announced that it will begin weighing passengers and their carry-on luggage on both domestic and international flights. The primary objectives of this initiative are to enhance aviation safety and reduce excessive fuel consumption. The weighing process will take place at Gimpo International Airport for domestic passengers between August 28 and September 6, and at Incheon Airport for international passengers from September 8 to 19, as reported by The Korea Herald.

This measure is in compliance with the aviation regulations set by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, which require the assessment of standardized passenger weight, including their carry-on items. Korean Air assures passengers that the collected data will be kept anonymous and solely used for safety operations.

Passengers who choose not to participate in the weighing process can inform the airline’s staff at the time of boarding. It is worth noting that some other airlines, such as Hawaiian Airlines in the United States and Finnair in Finland, also conduct passenger weight checks. In South Korea, domestic airlines like T’way Air and Jeju Air have been implementing weight measurements since 2018.
