New $100M Canal Commences Operations to Enhance Cargo Transportation in Northern Vietnam

A canal connecting two rivers has recently been inaugurated in Nam Dinh Province, located in the coastal region of northern Vietnam. The construction of this canal, which began in 2020, required a total investment of US$101 million, funded through loans from the World Bank.
The introduction of this canal brings significant benefits to businesses by reducing travel time for cargo vessels. It enables goods to be transported via waterways from Nam Dinh’s port to Ninh Binh Province, which shares a border with Hanoi. This alternative route offers a more efficient option compared to solely relying on roads or longer sea routes as was previously required.
Spanning a length of 1.18 kilometers and with a width of 90-100 meters, the canal is designed to accommodate vessels with a capacity of up to 3,000 tons. This infrastructure development opens up new possibilities for cargo transportation, providing a cost-effective and convenient solution for businesses operating in the region.
