The Singaporean government is actively supporting the initiative to export 1.2GW of offshore wind power from Vietnam to Singapore.
This commitment was expressed by the Singaporean government delegation during their visit to PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation’s (PTSC) facilities in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau on March 4.
The delegation included representatives from the Singaporean Embassy in Hanoi, the Singapore Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, the Ministry of Trade and Industry, the Energy Market Authority, and PTSC’s partner Sembcorp Utilities.
PTSC and Sembcorp Utilities obtained the Survey Permit and Conditional Approval to import clean electricity from Vietnam to Singapore from the authorities of both countries at the end of 2023. They are now working on further steps to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
During the visit, Singaporean government authorities were impressed by the modern and comprehensive infrastructure, facilities, and equipment invested by PTSC in the Asia-Pacific region, specifically for offshore renewable energy projects, including this cross-border initiative.
This has instilled greater confidence in Singaporean authorities regarding the Vietnam offshore wind project, a collaboration between Sembcorp Utilities and PTSC, which aligns with Singapore’s goal to import 4GW of renewable electricity by 2035.
The progress on this project is a significant outcome of the Energy Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Vietnam and Singapore in October 2022. This agreement underscores the commitment of both nations to support and facilitate clean energy transition efforts and regional decarbonization, including enhanced cross-border electricity trading.
