Vietnam’s Infrastructure Prepared for the Semiconductor Industry

A forum discussing Vietnam’s infrastructure readiness for the semiconductor industry took place in Hanoi on December 7, jointly organized by the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), the National Innovation Centre (NIC), and the US Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).

Minister Nguyen Chi Dung, addressing the participants, highlighted Vietnam’s commitment to fostering cooperation with the United States in developing the semiconductor industry, as outlined in the joint statement between the two nations. To support this, Vietnam has focused on enhancing the one-stop-shop mechanism, formulating a human resources development plan until 2030, and establishing the NIC in the Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park in Hanoi. The country is eager to collaborate with foreign companies and offers preferential treatment for investment cooperation projects in the semiconductor sector.

Minister Dung expressed confidence that SIA and its member businesses will gain valuable insights for devising plans to collaborate and invest in Vietnam.

John Neuffer, President and CEO of SIA, provided an overview of the collaborative efforts between the US and Vietnam to boost the semiconductor industry. He highlighted significant investments by SIA member companies, such as Intel, Marvell, Synopsys, Qualcomm, Ampere, and Infineon, demonstrating Vietnam’s growing role in the global semiconductor supply chain. Neuffer emphasized the tremendous opportunities for Vietnam to establish itself in this sector.

Vietnam has set clear directions, goals, and actions, creating a solid foundation for the semiconductor industry. With a dynamic and innovative ecosystem, rapid digital economy development, and robust growth in the high-tech industry, Vietnam is positioning itself as a new economic growth center in Asia.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc underscored Vietnam’s abundant human resources, with approximately one-third of students studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), witnessing a 10% increase in the last three years. The country excels in training mathematics and chemistry, providing a strong foundation for developing industries like semiconductors and information technology. He expressed hope for close cooperation and support from US firms to develop training programs and establish laboratories in Vietnamese universities.
