Report: Vietnam's Mobile Internet Speed Drops Nine Places in September

According to Ookla’s statistics, Vietnam experienced a decline in mobile Internet speed, dropping nine places from August. The Speedtest Global Index, which provides monthly rankings for mobile and fixed broadband speeds, revealed that Vietnam’s mobile Internet had a median download speed of 44.13 Mbps and an upload speed of 17.79 Mbps in September. This is in comparison to the median download speed of 47.08 Mbps and upload speed of 17.79 Mbps recorded in August, resulting in a drop in rank from 49th to 58th place.

Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence further highlighted that among the major mobile providers in Vietnam during the third quarter, Vinaphone had the fastest median download speed at 54.74 Mbps, followed by Viettel at 48.92 Mbps and Mobifone at 36.45 Mbps.

On the other hand, Vietnam’s fixed broadband Internet speed remained steady at 46th place in September. There was a slight increase in the median download speed from 93.11 to 94.45 Mbps compared to August, as well as a rise in the median upload speed from 93.4 to 94.03 Mbps. Viettel emerged as the fastest fixed broadband provider in Vietnam during the third quarter, with a median download speed of 109.77 Mbps, followed by FPT Telecom at 90.32 Mbps and Vinaphone at 82.48 Mbps.

It is worth noting that Vietnam currently faces issues with two out of its five undersea cables. In August, an Internet service provider reported problems with the Asia Pacific Gateway cable in two sections. In September, the unit responsible for operating and managing the AAE-1 undersea cable announced an issue with a cable section connecting Vietnam to Singapore.
