Vietnam and Denmark establish a green strategic partnership

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen jointly presided over a virtual ceremony on November 1, 2023, to announce the establishment of a Green Strategic Partnership between the two governments. In commemoration of the 52nd anniversary of bilateral relations, both sides have agreed to forge a Green Strategic Partnership.

Recognizing the strong ties developed in various areas, particularly in sustainable development, climate change, and green transition, this partnership will build upon and complement the existing Comprehensive Partnership Joint Statement between the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Government of Denmark established in September 2013.

It will also supplement the Joint Declaration between the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Government of Denmark on the Establishment of the Strategic Partnership in the areas of climate change, environment, energy, and green growth established in November 2011. The Green Strategic Partnership will support the implementation of both parties’ efforts to promote a green transition, enhance global commitments on climate, environment, and nature, and ensure a socially equitable green transition that generates green jobs and avoids exacerbating inequality.

With the approved Energy Master Plan, the Power Development Plan VIII, and the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with the International Partners Group (IPG), Vietnam will take significant strides in reducing carbon emissions in the energy sector and increasing the share of renewable energy. The parties acknowledge the importance of energy security and affordable energy costs for Vietnamese society and its citizens.

Both parties agree to continue collaborating on the development and publication of the Vietnam Energy Outlook Report, which will serve as a crucial technical foundation for policy design to support Vietnam’s targets of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and phasing out coal.
