Germany Backs Pilot Green Technology Initiative for Vietnamese Businesses

Vietnamese textile and garment exporters showcased green technology pilot projects at the Demo Day in Hanoi on June 17, supported by the German government’s initiative to assist Vietnamese businesses in adopting environmentally friendly practices.

Themed “For a Sustainable Garment and Textile Industry in Vietnam,” the event is part of the German government-funded “Green Tech Landing Pad” initiative, implemented in collaboration with the German Development Agency (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH) and the National Innovation Centre (NIC).

These pilot projects highlight the industry’s potential to transition to sustainable production methods and meet European market standards.

Vietnam’s garments and textiles sector contributes significantly to the GDP, averaging $30-50 billion, and is poised for further growth, especially with trade agreements like the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement. However, enterprises in this sector face technical challenges as they strive to adopt green and sustainable practices to meet EU standards and capitalize on growth opportunities.

The “Green Tech Landing Pad” (GTLP) initiative is designed to address these challenges strategically. It identifies, connects, and facilitates the adoption of green technologies among Vietnamese garments and textiles enterprises, ensuring alignment with European sustainability criteria.

Dennis Quennet, Director of Sustainable Economic Development at GIZ Vietnam, emphasized, “German-Vietnamese cooperation extends beyond today’s Demo Day. On behalf of the German government, GIZ remains committed to supporting Vietnam’s digital and green transformation by collaborating with both public and private sectors across various industries. Together, we aim to strengthen the role of startups and small- and medium-sized enterprises in Vietnam’s economy, enhancing competitiveness while fostering innovation, opportunities, and employment.”
