Vietnam aims to achieve $6 billion in vegetable and fruit exports this year

Vietnam is poised to achieve a significant milestone in its vegetable and fruit exports this year, with an estimated revenue of US$6 billion, according to Dang Phuc Nguyen, the General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association. The country has experienced robust export growth in recent months, as evidenced by the statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs. In the first half of this month alone, Vietnam exported vegetables and fruits worth $349.52 million, contributing to a total export revenue of $4.56 billion from January 1 to October 15, representing a remarkable year-on-year surge of 75.4%.

Vietnam’s vegetable and fruit exports have been consistently increasing on a monthly basis. Notably, export earnings reached $404.4 million in July, $464 million in August, and $667 million in September. If this growth momentum continues, Vietnam could potentially achieve a record-breaking $700 million in vegetable and fruit exports this month, setting a new benchmark for the Southeast Asian country.

China has been a key market for Vietnam’s vegetable and fruit exports, accounting for $2.7 billion from January to September, a staggering year-on-year increase of 160% and constituting 65% of Vietnam’s total vegetable and fruit exports. The current export figures have surpassed the previous record of $3.18 billion set in 2018, and it is highly likely that the estimated $5 billion forecasted by experts earlier will be exceeded. Several products, including durians, mangos, jackfruits, bananas, and sweet potatoes, have reported high export turnovers.

Furthermore, Nguyen highlighted that China tends to increase its imports of vegetables and fruits towards the end of the year, particularly dragon fruits, watermelons, and mangos, in preparation for the consumption during the Lunar New Year holiday in February 2024.
