Vietnam’s sugar industry boasts a significant role in the nation’s economy, with a total cane planting area exceeding 166,900 hectares and a refined sugar production volume reaching 1.58 million metric tons in 2022. Despite ranking 15th globally in sugarcane production and 14th in sugar production, Vietnam relies on imports to meet its domestic demand of 1.8 million tons annually. While exports are limited, primarily reaching China and Southeast Asia, the industry faces several challenges, including low productivity compared to major producers, price volatility, climate change impacts, and competition from imported sugar. Nevertheless, with government support through subsidies, technology transfer, market access, and research & development, the industry holds promise for future growth, fueled by increasing domestic demand and a focus on sustainable practices.
